WWA-NIDIS July 2012 Drought Update

Under a second winter of La Niña, drought conditions emerged midway through the 2012 water year, with low snowpacks melting out early during a very dry and warm spring. Spring and early summer runoff over most of the region was well below average, with flows similar to 2002 and other benchmark drought years. Continued dry and hot conditions in June dried out vegetation and led to very large and intense wildfires in all three states, along with widespread rangeland, pasture, and dryland crop losses.

May 2012 Intermountain West Climate Summary

Temperature — April temperatures were well above average across the entire region, with most of the region 4–8°F warmer than average.
Precipitation — While April was wetter than March, precipitation was still below average across most of the region, with southern Utah, western Colorado, and west-central and southeastern Wyoming being especially dry.
Hydrological Conditions — Snowpacks across the region continued their rapid and early melt during April, with May 1 snowpacks near or at record-low levels for many basins. Accordingly, the May 1 forecasts call for much-below-average spring-summer runoff for nearly all basins the
region.
ENSO — ENSO-neutral conditions have returned to the tropical Pacific Ocean. More than half of the ENSO forecast models indicate that El Niño conditions will develop by fall 2012, with the rest calling for persisting ENSO-neutral conditions through the fall.
Climate Forecasts — The temperature outlooks from the NOAA CPC indicate an enhanced chance of warmer-than-average temperatures in nearly all of the region in June and in
subsequent seasons. A slightly enhanced chance of dry conditions is indicated only for northern Utah and western Wyoming.

October 2011 Intermountain West Climate Summary

Temperature — Temperatures for September were warmer than average across nearly all of the region.
Precipitation — September was generally drier than average across the region, and especially dry in Wyoming, northern Utah, and southeastern Colorado.
ENSO — After a brief hiatus this summer, La Niña conditions have re-emerged and are expected to persist through the winter season.
Climate Outlooks — Consistent with the La Niña conditions, in the late fall and winter seasons, the CPC seasonal outlooks call for some enhanced risk of warmer and drier conditions in the extreme southern portions of our region, and of wetter conditions in the northern portions.

Hydrological Conditions — The cool, wet April delayed melt and added to the snowpack across most of the region's mountains, and very high spring-summer runoff and peak flows are forecast for northern Utah, northern Colorado, and south-central and western Wyoming.
ENSO — The current La Niña has continued to weaken and is transitioning to ENSO-neutral conditions by this summer.
Climate Forecasts — The temperature outlooks from the NOAA CPC indicate an enhanced risk of warmer-than-average temperatures in the southern part of the region in June and subsequent seasons. An enhanced risk of dry conditions is indicated for Wyoming in June and the summer season.

Jan 2011 Intermountain West Climate Summary

Temperature & Precipitation —December was unusually warm across the region, and unusually wet in Utah and most of southern Wyoming and western Colorado, as strong westerly
and southwesterly flow moderated the temperatures and brought abundant moisture. Eastern Colorado remained on the dry side.
Hydrological Conditions — With the abundant December moisture, mountain snowpacks in nearly all basins across the region were above-average at the end of 2010, and the January 1 streamflow forecasts for spring and summer runoff reflect the generally high snowpack levels.
ENSO — Borderline strong La Niña conditions have continued into mid-winter, and the current La Niña event is forecasted to persist through Spring 2011, though with weakening expected.
Climate Forecasts — Given the La Niña conditions, much of the Intermountain West is forecasted to have an enhanced risk of above-average temperatures and below-average
precipitation through Spring 2011.

Oct 2010 Intermountain West Climate Summary

Temperature — Nearly all locations across the Intermountain West region had above-average temperatures for September, as there were few storms to bring cold air or much moisture.
Precipitation — September was a very dry month for the region, with a large swath across all three states seeing less than 0.25\" of precipitation.
ENSO — A strong La Niña event has developed, and is expected to persist at least through spring 2011, influencing the climate outlook for our region throughout this period.
Climate Outlooks — For November and subsequent seasons, the CPC seasonal outlooks call for an enhanced probability of warmer-than-average temperatures and an enhanced probability
of below-average precipitation for the southern portions of the Intermountain West, consistent with typical La Niña conditions.

July 2010 Intermountain West Climate Summary

Temperature — June saw cooler-than-average temperatures in Wyoming and northern Utah, and warmer-than-average conditions to the south, particularly in southeastern Colorado.
Precipitation — Most of Wyoming and portions of Utah and northern Colorado experienced above-average precipitation in June, while dry conditions were prevalent in southern Colorado.
Hydrological Conditions — Very warm temperatures in late May and early June led to above-average peak daily flows in the first half of June in most basins. Major flooding occurred in central and southeast Wyoming.
ENSO — La Niña conditions are currently developing across the equatorial Pacific, and the onset of a La Niña event is likely by the end of August.
Climate Forecasts — For August and subsequent seasons, the CPC seasonal outlooks call for an enhanced probability of warmer-than-average temperatures for the western parts of the Intermountain region, and an enhanced probability of below-average precipitation for Utah and above-average precipitation in northeast Colorado.

Intermountain West Climate Summary May 2010

Temperature — In April 2010, temperatures were generally near average across the region, with only scattered areas experiencing anomalies greater than 2°F above or below average.
Precipitation — Storm tracks finally shifted to the north in April, bringing above-average precipitation across much of northern Colorado and Utah, along with parts of southern
Wyoming, but leaving southeastern Utah unusually dry for the month.
Hydrological Conditions — The April moisture in the northern part of the region was "too little, too late", and forecasted streamflows for the spring–summer runoff season are still below average in nearly every basin across the region.
ENSO — The current El Niño event is transitioning to ENSO-neutral conditions, with the tropical Pacific shifting from warmer-than-average to average sea surface temperatures. The wet influence of El Niño on the region's weather this spring is tapering off as well.
Climate Forecasts — For June and subsequent seasons, the CPC seasonal outlooks call for an enhanced risk of warmer-than-average temperatures for the southern and western parts of the Intermountain region, and an enhanced risk of above-average precipitation for eastern Colorado and eastern Wyoming.

Intermountain West Climate Summary April 2010

In March, precipitation was below average for Colorado and Utah and above average in Wyoming. As a result, drought expanded in western Colorado and eastern Utah and decreased in southern and northwestern Wyoming. Below average temperatures and a few big snow storms at the end of
March/beginning of April in the mountains of central and western Colorado, western Wyoming and extreme southeastern Wyoming kept the drought status away from those areas.

Precipitation in March was above average in Wyoming, and below average in Colorado and Utah. As a result, snowpack as a percent of average increased in parts of Wyoming, and
decreased throughout most of Colorado and Wyoming.

Streamflow projections are below average to much below average for the Intermountain West Region, due to below average precipitation across most of the region in the last
few months. However, most reservoirs are near average now, and they should be able to fill this year.

Western Water Assessment March 2010 Newsletter

Below normal temperatures occurred across the Western Region through February. Above average precipitation took place over the Southern Intermountain West. Above average snow packs are now occurring over far Southern Utah and Southern Colorado. El Nino is expected to weaken for the next few months. CPC seasonal outlooks are forecasting warmer-than-average temperatures for the Western Intermountain Region and a slight chance of above-average precipitation for the southern and eastern areas of the region.

Scientists find that Utah\'s bad air is connected to the arctic

Climate researchers at Utah State University have found that a connection exists between an atmospheric pattern know as the Arctic Oscillation and Utah's bad air days. The phase and strength of the Arctic Oscillation influences the development of high pressure over the Western U.S. and, consequently, the intensity and persistence of inversions which trap urban pollution near the surface.
